Why are there so many monasteries in the Augsburg region?
To answer this question, let's take a look into the past. Three monasteries can still be visited today:
Oberschönenfeld Monastery, Holzen Monastery and Thierhaupten Monastery.
All three are ideal excursion destinations for families and those seeking relaxation and combine cultural and recreational experiences.
The monastery landscape in the Augsburg region was even denser than many people know today. In addition to the three monasteries mentioned, there were many other monastery foundations in the high Middle Ages in Salmannshofen, Klosterlechfeld, Welden, Leitau, Violau, Hausen, Muttershofen and Hammelberg. However, most of them were abandoned during secularisation.
