A total of 22 buildings are part of Augsburg's water management system, bringing history to life. The majority of the historical buildings can be found in the city of Augsburg.
But there are also three exciting technical monuments in the Augsburg region that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. All three power stations are located on the River Lech and utilise its wild nature and hydropower to generate energy.

  • The historic building sits on the Lech Canal like a small castle. The water-powered turbines generate around 62 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The hydroelectric power station in Gersthofen is of particular historical significance, as its operation from 1901 onwards led to the development of industry in the northern Lech Valley and gradually enabled Bavarian Swabia to be supplied with electricity.

  • Lechmuseum Langweid

A red brick building towering over the Lech. The hydroelectric power station can even be visited in Langweid. The Lechmuseum Bayern invites you to experience how energy can be generated from water. One of the highlights is the historic turbine chamber, which you can walk through. At the same time, you can learn about the fauna and flora of the Lech.

  • Wasserkraftwerk Meitingen
The power station in Meitingen is the furthest away from the other objects of the Augsburg water management system, but this does not make it any less important. This is because the power station was an important building block for the strategic development during the industrialisation of the area north of Augsburg in order to supply the companies with electricity.
